Old-fashioned greek lettering in shop displays in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece
The following images comprise of examples of greek lettering as they appear in
various shop displays in Thessaloniki, Greece. The exact age of each design is
not known (except perhaps img 12) but the similarity of certain
letterfoms with the ones found in greek cinema posters of the 50s and 60s (in
the works of Giorgos Vakirtzis, Stefanos Almaliotis and more) can lead to the
conclusion that these displays have been designed 40 to 50 years ago (with the
exceptions of img 6, img 14 and - maybe - img 8 which are
rather new).
The specimens have been found in the center of Thessaloniki, mostly in old
markets and neighborhoods, such as Modiano Market, Benizelou Str., Ag.
Dimitriou Str. and various, so-called, "Stoes" throughout the city (small
hallways in the ground floor of block of flats where small shops and ateliers
reside). The collection will be updated as frequently as possible.
